Composting Workshops

Workshops are offered from May through October at Closed Loop Park, Dirt Works and Olympia Farmers Market demonstration gardens. Workshops alternate between Yard Waste and Worms / Kitchen Waste.

Yard Waste Workshop


Master Recycler Composters will teach you how to make rich compost for your garden in a demonstration clinic. Free public workshop. Question and Answer atmosphere. No pre-registration is necessary.

Worm Bin (Food Waste) Workshop


Master Recycler Composters will teach a how-to workshop on worm bin composting. Free public workshop. Question and Answer atmosphere. No pre-registration is necessary.

Closed Loop Park is located just inside the Thurston County Waste and Recovery Center entrance at 2418 Hogum Bay Road in Lacey (Hawk’s Prairie). Closed Loop Park is open the same hours at the Waste and Recovery Center. [map] For hours visit

Dirt Works Garden is located inside Yauger Park in West Olympia. Yauger Park entrance is on Alta Street off of Capital Mall Drive. The entrance to the garden is located at the end of the Yauger Park parking lot next to the new Community Garden. [map]

*During the Plant Sale, take home composting information will be available throughout the sale. Master Recycler Composter volunteers will be stationed by the composting area to answer questions.

Olympia Farmers Market Garden (Gallacci Gardens) is located on the East side of the Market. The Market is located at 700 Capitol Way N, Olympia, WA 98501 From I-5, take exit 105A, to City Center After passing through the Capital Campus underpass, turn right on Capitol Way. Proceed north through downtown Olympia,toward the waterfront. Plenty of free parking behind the Market, at the end of Capitol Way [map]

  • Seasonal Garden Transformations
    Starts: 12:00 am
    Ends: May 3, 2015 - 12:00 am
    Description: Spring has Sprung – 1pm – 3pm. RSVP by April 2 to and you will receive directions to the garden. Many plants have already come and gone, but there are lots of beautiful specimens just awakening and others in full glory. This time, we’ll expect to see fritillaria, bleeding heart, podophyllum, arisaema (Jack in the Pulpit), Voodoo Lily, Solomon Seal, trillium, iris, oxalis, and hopefully the tree peonies etc. Bring a seed packet for veggies or annuals, or a small potted plant to share. We’ll do a seed/plant swap so you can enhance your diversity of varieties this year. And if you’re not a seed person, you’ll get a new plant! Beverages and nibbles will be provided.

  • Drip Irrigation

    Description: Join Master Gardener Ken Bedat as he shows how he partially modified an overhead/ pop-up landscape style irrigation system to function with a drip irrigation component.

    The workshop will cover:
    ◾Both landscape and vegetable garden drip applications.
    ◾Best practice advice in drip irrigation operations.
    ◾Show physical examples of the different materials needed and sources for them.
    ◾Planning and procedural advice if you want to implement a new or retrofit an existing system.

    Description: Learn how to garden on a small scale: This is a make & take workshop; everyone who attends will make a container filled with veggies, herbs and flowers.
